Reserve Wines Eden Valley Gewürztraminer
{THE FRUIT}
The fruit was machine harvested from the Stephens' family's Wyncroft Vineyard in the Eden Valley at night at just over 12º Baumé and transferred immediately to the winery.
{THE WINEMAKING}
The juice was divided into batches, which were used to experiment with fermentation using different yeast and temperature regimes. The final blend includes all four with delicate freshness being balancing with the fuller, richer flavours.
{THE COMMENTS}
The wine is a light straw in colour, with green highlights. On the nose it shows incredibly spicy, upfront fruit, with obvious lychee characters. The spiciness follows through the bouquet and provides persistent palate flavour. The combination of smooth, glycerol-like viscosity and fresh acidity produces a white wine of great depth and length.
Current vintage 2001.

This rich and spicy white is one of the Burge team’s ongoing experimental series. It shows floral and spice characters on the nose and palate with a rich complex palate and a crisp finish. Try it now with Chinese dishes or cell for a few years. Rating: 90.

…is aimed at an Alsace style and doesn’t fall far short of the mark. It is a light straw colour with green hues and has a very spicy nose with upfront fruit and some lychee characters. Not as pungent as the Alsace wines. The palate is soft and round despite the wine’s youth and there is further spice and some fresh acidity. A lovely first-up example of this style.

Look for…Grant Burge. The flavours tend to the obvious with lychees, rose petals, chalk, musk, spice and citrus. Many find them an excellent match for Asian dishes, though that is a broach brush. Done well, gewurz has much to offer.

“
With a bouquet of redolent of Turkish delight and a viscous, lightly sweet palate, this wine makes a wonderful partner to spicy Asian seafood dishes. Try with chilli prawns.
