Vineyard Range Thorn Riesling
{THE FRUIT}
The Eden Valley area of the Barossa is renowned for producing some of Australia’s finest Riesling styles, as the cooler climate and higher rainfall, provide ideal conditions for Riesling. The fruit for this wine is sourced mainly from 30 year old vines in the Thorn Family Vineyard, and the Summers Eden Valley Vineyard. The 2008/09 growing season saw average rainfalls throughout the year with a warm October and extreme heat just prior to vintage beginning. The warm temperature and lower levels of subsoil moisture saw the crops with lower yields than average, however these cooler climate vineyards consistently produce wines with exceptional fresh varietal characters.
{THE WINEMAKING}
About half of the fruit was whole bunch pressed to maximise the elegance of the wine, the rest of the fruit was crushed directly into a tank press and the juice drained immediately to minimise skin contact. After settling for 48 hours, the juice was racked and two cultured yeasts added to begin fermentation. Only the free run juice was used in this wine, and after a five week temperature controlled fermentation at 11° C, the wine was centrifuged, blended and ready to bottle.
{THE COMMENTS}
The 2009 Thorn Riesling shows pale straw colouring and boasts a powerful array of complex aromas, ripe grapefruit, elegant florals and true Eden Valley varietal lemon, lime and minerals. The palate is well rounded and portrays more of the same from the nose; ripe rich grapefruit and lemon tang, with delicate florals. This wine shows excellent balance, integration and length, and will reward from careful cellaring for five to ten years, or may be enjoyed now; a perfect choice with fresh natural oysters with squeezed lime and lemon juice.

"This label is a perennial good buy. Clean, shy, subtle but fragrant riesling aromas — dried flowers and lime/citrus. It's a trifle forward perhaps, but so much the better for the average drinker, as it's soft, ready and balanced, with a touch of richness."

The Edne Valley wine region is part of the Barossa and is renowned for producing quality riesling. This is a flavoursome wine with classic citrus and floral characters ahead of a refreshing, crsip acid finish.

Burge's '08 Eden Valley riesling is sporting some handy ripeness and attractive richness in its youth. Concentrated flavour builds up to stone fruits and ripe citrus, acidity slides through below and holds a whisper-clean, juicy line through the finish.

Lots of deep fruit: apple skin, lemon peel. Smells of minerally acidity, too. Attacks plump and soft; bruised apples and dried banana and then tingly chewy, but also quite creamy. Lots of flavour.

"A typical lemony, honeysuckley Eden Valley riesling with subtle herbal notes. The taste is light and refined, with citrus flavours and soft, well-balanced acidity. This could reward cellaring too."

Grant Burge's credentials are second to none when it comes to producing excellent Eden Valley Rieslings, and the bonus is that they are a bargain. The Thorn '04 sums it up; brilliant greenish colour, pure lime, spice and mint varietal aromas, clean lime and lemon-like flavours, good depth and a dry, tangy finish. Great value. Rating 4 1/2 stars

Here is another example of the good value that Eden Valley riesling represents. It has floral aromas, a touch of characteristic talc, is clean, fresh and lively with some lime-juice flavours and crisp, zippy acidity to finish.

Grant Burge 2004 Thorn Riesling Eden Valley Feminine on the nose, but a little broad on the palate. Pear and talc notes start things off, with heaps of stone fruit, white pepper and citrus flavors. A very good wine, but doesn't quite have the kick of acidity that it has had in recent vintages.

Top Five Wines of the Year Purity, finesse and intense varietal flavour. The colour is pale straw with green tints; the aroma spicy/citrusy and the palate intense, steely and taut. Enjoy now or hold for five years. Perfect with all that Christmas seafood.

“
Eden Valley, a valley within a valley, benefits from its elevation, which cools and moderates the temprature and sets Eden Valley apart from the larger Barossa appellation, which is quite hot. This area is second only to the Clare in terms of its ability to produce high class Rieslings. Burge's 2004 Thorn Riesling is full and rich on the palate, shows an evolved minerality on the nose and ripe citrus, with an underpinning of firm acidity. Oh, and it's delicious, too. — Robert Whitley 90 Points

The nose has the characteristic floral aromas of the Eden Valley Riesling, with spice and lime, while on the palate it is crisp and steely into a dry finish. The 2002 Grant Burge Thorn Eden Valley Riesling is a well balanced wine already but will benefit from five or more years in the cellar.

“
Despite a fractionally sugary finish to please the crowds, this is a fragrant, musky Riesling with a long, mineral palate and a hint of austerity. Its perfumed aromas suggest talcum power, musky apples and pears, while its chalky palate finishes with lingering lemony flavours. Drink 2007 – 2010.
