Fortified Wines 20 Year Old Tawny
{THE FRUIT}
This exceptional mature tawny is made from the Barossa's traditional tawny varieties - grenache, mataro and shiraz - and has been blended to an average age of 20 years.
{THE WINEMAKING}
A solera-based system is used, enabling us to consistently release wines of high quality. A limited quantity of 20 Year Old Tawny is drawn for bottling each year and the barrels topped up with selected younger wine.
{THE COMMENTS}
The Grant Burge 20 Year Old Tawny is a rich, mature wine showing deep tawny colour, complex rancio characters on the bouquet and excellent integration of spirit. The palate is sweet and mellow but finishes quite dry and shows a harmonious balance of developed fruit characters and oak tannins.

“
A lovely elegant wine. Excellent nose; nice heady spirit and fresh mocha aromas. Luscious, syrupy palate; long, spicy and warm.”

“
Made from shiraz, grenache and mataro (otherwise known as mourvedre), this Barossan tawny draws on its 20 year old solera system pedigree to the full. Older wine being drawn off, younger wine being added to keep the stockpot full, so to speak. Plenty of rancio, a smooth and unctuous palate and then a dry finish with the spirit well in control.

“
Magnificent, brandied nose that sings of Chesterfields, cloves and smoking jackets. Richly rancio. Dark, spiced pudding nd deeply roasted hazelnuts simmering over blazing coals. Fiery, alcoholic kick gives this fantastic definition. Wickedly sinful

"Grant Burge has twice produced the world's best fortified wine, and he is the first winemaker outside of Portugal ever to do so.
The Grant Burge 20 year old Tawny port was awarded the prestiguious Decanter International Trophy in 2005 and 2007, topping it's competitors from soutern Europe — traditionally known as home of the world's finest fortified wines.
Thinking the odds were stacked against him, Grant never expected to wint the award. "Topping the world rankings for a fortified wine is an incredible accolade — especially when traditionalists have long contended the finest fortified wines come from the northern hemisphere," he said. "Australia is not particularly known for its fortified wines, but when people try our tawny port, they certainly fall in love with it."
Grant inherited family fortified wines dating back 50 years, and has since built on that base to produce the best in the world. Despite initial financial pressure to sell the wines, Grant says he couldn't throw away such a legacy. Instead, he got serious about fortified winemaking, developing his own bottle and label, and travelling to Portugal to learn more about the industry.
Fortified winemaking makes up less than 10per cent of the business at Grant Burge Wines — but the focus is on quality, not quantity. "We only have five fortified wines, but we really set about making them into world-class wines." Grant said
