Vineyard Range Zerk Semillon Viognier
{THE FRUIT}
The Semillon fruit for this wine come predominately from the Zerk Vineyard, owned by fourth generation Barossan, Robert Zerk and his wife Janine. As the vines are over 70 years old, they produce fruit with great depth, flavour and complexity. The Viognier fruit is sourced from the cooler climate of the Adelaide Hills, a region well suited to growing white varieties. The 2008/09 growing season saw average rainfalls throughout the year with a warm October and extreme heat just prior to vintage beginning. The warm temperature and lower levels of subsoil moisture saw the crops with lower yields than average, however the fruit showed clean varietal characters.
{THE WINEMAKING}
The grapes were mainly handpicked at 13.3° Baumé to maintain the fruit colour and flavour. The Semillon fruit was crushed and de-stemmed and the Viognier component whole-bunch pressed to increase the elegance of the wine. After crushing and draining, the Semillon juice was transferred to stainless steel tanks to begin fermentation; while the Viognier was fermented in 2 and 3 year old French oak. The Viognier was then matured in the same oak as used during fermentation therefore utilising less stirring to increase palate complexity for four months. The Semillon was kept in stainless steel tanks to retain freshness.
{THE COMMENTS}
The 2009 Semillon Viognier has pale straw colouring with hints of green. The wine shows a complex yet delicate bouquet of citrus blossom, apricots, orange sherbet and candied lemon citrus. The palate is rich and mouth filling with fresh fruit flavours and hints of shortbread from the oak and lees contact. A beautifully balanced wine with fresh acidity which also lends generous length of flavour and a clean finish. The Zerk Semillon Viognier is ready to drink now, or will mature for up to eight years. The wine is a delicious match with full-flavoured fish, lighter meats and mild spicy Asian dishes.

‘Scented with musky nuances of apricot blossom and zesty lemon, this round, smooth and richly textured blend delivers plenty of tangy citrus and stone fruit flavours. It finishes with lingering flavour and refreshing acids. Viognier cheerfully dominates this blend, Semillon delivering length and focus…’

A seemingly quixotic blend, which does, however work quiet well, for it is light on its feet, with citrus/mineral acidity tightening the palate and giving length.

Knew a girl called Zerk once, who rightfully kept her name when she got married. Thus she couldn’t be accused of a nee-Zerk reaction. Wonder if she’d like this? 8.3/10

On-lees fermentation and batonage (lees stirring) have been used in the Zerk with the aim of building complexity and softness. The wine has freshness and citrus fruit flavours that are completed by crisp acid.

“
Sometimes a wine is just right. You know, mood, weather, food, friends. Having all of these things come together at once is what it's all about. With this wine I would throw in a bit of nostalgia with that mix too. It always makes me think of someone in particular, and I'm not telling who. I must confess I never thought I'd be saying these things about a wooded wine either, but there you go. 8.3/10."

For a young wine, the sheer complexity of aromas and flavours impressed the judges. From quince and sherbet notes, to the straw and toasty richness on the palate, it’s a well-proportioned wine that will gain even better balance in the future. A big, oaky style wine. 3 ½ stars.

Grant Burge is consistently one of the best Barossa's semillon producers, thanks to the supply of grapes from 70 year old vines on the Zerk, vineyard near Lyndoch. Like most Barossa producers, the wine is oaked, in this case using French 40% and American 60% barrels, about half of which are new and the rest one year old. It’s barrel fermented and aged in wood for about five months. The panel enjoyed the 1994 Grant Burge Zerk Semillon (current vintage $17), which had deep honey and straw aromas, was full, round and robust yet mellow, with lanolin and buttered toast flavours and hints of honeycomb, still with a strong acid structure.
