Vineyard Range Summers Chardonnay
{THE FRUIT}
Grant selects his fruit from prime cooler climate vineyards with a large portion of the fruit picked from his Summers vineyard in Eden Valley and the remainder coming from the cool climate of the Adelaide Hills.
The earlier start to vintage brought on by the dry 2007 season provided challenging growing conditions for white grapes. However the cooler regions from which this Chardonnay fruit is sourced was less affected by this dry and warmer weather and so continued to produce excellent conditions for Chardonnay. The fruit for the Summers Chardonnay was all hand picked at around 14° Baume.
{THE WINEMAKING}
The fruit was chilled and whole bunch pressed, then a combination of cultured and natural indigenous yeast ferments took place in new, and one and two year old French oak hogsheads with solids to assist with mouthfeel. Maturation was then carried out in the same oak casks that were used in fermentation; regular stirring of lees was carried out to increase the complexity of the wine until blending occurred in January 2008.
{THE COMMENTS}
The 2007 Summers Chardonnay is an elegant and luscious wine, with pale straw colouring. The wine has an intense and complex nose showing sweet ripe fruits and subtle green melons, complimented with creamy hazelnut and warm stone fruit aromas. The palate is equally enticing with a rich, creamy mouth feel and melon flavours continuing from the nose. It is beautifully balanced with integrated oak along with mineral and lime acidity, and has terrific length. It is drinking well now and will develop further complexities with correct short to mid-term cellaring.
Although elegant, this wine can support full flavoured food such as Asian spiced quail with coconut rice, roasted pork loin with fennel or a creamy seafood gumbo.

A big, rich toasty wine, pushing toward fresh figs and almonds; rich and deep on the palate, but a little heavy on the finish.

The 2006 Chardonnay “Summers” was barrel-fermented and aged in French oak with stirring of the lees. It reveals notes of toasty oak, butter, apple, pear, and a hint of tropical fruits. Smooth textured, ripe, and concentrated, it will drink well for 2–3 years. It is a very good value (wine).

Developed colour; is obvious but, particularly on the palate, fine, nectarine fruit comes through strongly, reflecting the regional components.

A lot to like about this full flavoured chardonnay that combines some fresh lime and light marmalade characters with richer toasty nuttiness. Good wine for the next two years especially with white meat dishes or creamy pastas.

This hails (55 per cent) from Burge’s not long established Summers vineyard in the Eden Valley, the rest is from the Adelaide Hills. As wooded chardonnays must not show their oak, if they are to stay popular, this has it cleverly hidden.

A gold-medal at the 2004 Adelaide Wine Show and a perennial favourite of mine. Cool-grown Adelaide Hills and Eden Valley fruit. Great value; a wine that shows some of the elegance and complexity (from sophisticated winemaking) that you expect to see in much dearer chardonnays.

“
Grapefruit, nettle and basil smelling; cool and zesty. Has tightness and zest in the mouth too, with lovely grapefruit flavours and mid-palate creaminess, building nutty smoky characters to close. Great value chardonnay; really stylish. 91/100.

“
Big, rich and complex but balanced by some excellent fresh acids and a refined structure, good varietal fruit and subtle oak making for a full-flavoured, elegant and crisply refreshing drop that will be even better after a few years in the cellar.
Rating: (very good).

Burge makes very good wines and this wine reinforces his reputation as one of the best, if not the best, of the middle-sized wineries in the Barossa. He’s consistent too. The Summers Chardonnay, together with a layer of restrained and elegant oak, has a full, satisfying palate. It has balance and complexity and, again, I recommend it highly to you.
