  • 5th Generation | Sauvignon Blanc Semillon

As a fifth Generation Vigneron this range pays homage to the winemaking endeavours of Grant’s forefathers whilst showcasing the exemplary fruit and unrivalled quality which only the Barossa can produce.

All of the 5th Generation wines have been sourced from site specific, premium vineyard sites. The whites come from cooler, site specific vineyards, some from old vines (Semillon 99 and 65 year old) . All the white ferments have had extended lees contact, with some parcels matured in French oak. The reds are also from site specific, premium quality vineyards.

    The Fruit:

The fruit for this wine is a combination of Sauvignon Blanc (53%) from the cool Adelaide Hills, combined with old vine Barossa Semillon (47%).

    The Winemaking:

The Sauvignon Blanc fruit was picked in the cool of the night, crushed and destemmed immediately to maintain fruit and varietal flavour, while the Semillon was handpicked, chilled and whole bunch pressed for purity and finesse. The fruit was mostly cold fermented in stainless steel at 11 degrees. 26% was fermented in 1-5 year old French oak with 3 months of battonage (stirring of yeast lees). Oak fermented batches were fermented on full solids with wild yeast for extra complexity.

    The Comments:

The 2015 5th Generation Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is a pale and delicate wine made from cool climate Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc and Old-Vine Barossa Semillon, this wine is both elegantly structured and full flavoured. The nose is a perfect harmony of passionfruit, lychee and herbaceous aromas from the Sauvignon Blanc, with delicate top notes of lime zest and the sweet richness of lemon curd from the Semillon. There is also a hint of spiced cream, vanilla fudge and lemon meringue thanks to the portion of this wine that was fermented in French oak with solids and extended battonage. On the palate, this wine is beautifully balanced with intense up front varietal flavours of tropical fruit and citrus, a touch of creamy complexity in the mid palate, and a long finish with zesty natural acidity. A vibrant and varietal blend for immediate drinking.

This blend creates a fine harmony between both varieties. There is a tropical note of the sauvignon blanc and more lemon curd, sweet citrus richness of the semillon, all seasoned with a lime zestiness that makes for an all-rounder style just right for the summer ahead.

A weightier, riper, more tropical fruity drop …. with a touch of popular fruit sweetness filling the mouth and lifting the finish.

The Sauvignon Blanc seems all citrus-like fruit, leaning more to semillon than Sauvignon Blanc.

Light yellow colour. Yeasty, estery aroma, very raw 'new wine' nose. Light and intense, yeast-derived throughout and not especially varietal or well defined. But it's still a baby.

The 2012 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon is lemon green in colour with lifted fruit aromas of citrus and melon all delicately interwoven with subtle herbaceous notes. The palate is fresh and lively, with ripe tropical fruit flavours, zesty lime and a soft creamy lemon curd finish. The portion of Semillon spent on lees rounds the palate, adding an extra dimension to the wine. A wine best enjoyed young. Match with fresh seafood such as Thai fish cakes or shellfish.
