    The Fruit:

The 2013 vintage in the Barossa saw a cool winter with rainfall well below average followed by a dry spring leading to a smaller than normal fruit set and berry size. Although crops were much lower than normal the resulting wines have great colour and impressive structure resulting in very high quality wines. Daly Road Shiraz Mourvèdre is a wine which combines two classic Barossa varieties of Shiraz (64%) and Mourvèdre (36%), to produce a silky smooth intriguing blend.

    The Winemaking:

The wine batches of Shiraz and Mourvèdre were carefully chosen by the winemakers for their silky smooth tannins, varietal characteristics and balance. The different grape varieties were fermented separately, followed by a short maceration on skins for 4 to 5 days. Once complete the wine was matured for 16 months in a combination of French, Hungarian and American oak hogsheds that were predominantly between 3 and 4 years old so that the fruit characteristics were preserved.

    The Comments:

The 2013 Daly Road is deep red, with vibrant purple hues. The aromas are a combination of classic Shiraz characters of plum, red fruit and spice with earthy tones from the Mourvèdre. The well balanced palate has lovely raspberry fruit flavours with a savoury complexity, finishing with long silky tannins.

This wine will improve with short-term cellaring, and is an impressive accompaniment to beef dishes or traditional roast pork.

There's rich dark berry and plum fruit on the nose and palate of this product of the excellent 2012 Barossa vintage, along with some spice and restrained oak. It would be a good accompaniment to richer red meat dishes or roast leg of pork over the next few years.

Clear crimson; has great freshness on the bouquet and medium-bodied palate; clever work in the winery has given a silky, supple mouthfeel to the wine, the focus on red and black cherry inviting early consumption.

If you like full juicy Barossa wines, you'll fall in love with Grant Burge's vibrant purple-rimmed shiraz Mourvedre blend. This is big and ripe but genteel Barossa - capturing the tender, slurpy fruitiness of shiraz, tempered by the savour, spice and firm tannins of Mourvedre. The blend is 60 % shiraz and 40% Mourvedre, all from Burge's Daly Road vineyard located near Lyndoch, at the southern end of the Barossa Valley.

Intriging, slightly funky frangrances and big, mouthfilling, sweet plum fruit flavours.

The shiraz Mourvedre comes from the Daly Road vineyard which has been producing great grapes for many years from sandy loam soils and the Lyndoch microclimate which produce finely textured wines of great complexity. It is an immediately approachable wine.

The first word that springs to mind when tasting this wine is - "yummy". It is juicy in blackberry fruit with spicy overtones, soft in texture yet full-bodied and lingering and spicy to finish. It's a wine that is enjoyable on its own - very enjoyable actually as I was cooking spaghetti Bolognese for friends - but luckily there was sufficient to share with my friends over our meal.

As the name suggests, this dark Barossa beauty is a blend of shiraz (60 per cent) and Mourvedre (the rest). It's full of spice and tannins with a hint of cinnamon and star anise. Perfect to warm you up on a cold night.

Lovely example of a shiraz blended with a complementary variety. Plums and spices on the nose and wonderfully ripe fruit palate with well-handled oak.
