  • Fortified Wines | 10 Year Old Tawny

Grant is very fond of his fortifieds, and as a world winner of best fortified (3 times over) he knows his stuff.

    10 Year Old Tawny

    The Fruit:

This fine mature tawny is made from the Barossa’s traditional tawny varieties - grenache, mataro and shiraz - and has been blended to an average age of 10 years.

    The Winemaking:

The Tawny Material is assessed and reblended into a solera-based system, which will enable us to consistently release wines of high quality. Only a strictly limited quantity of 10 Year Old Tawny will be drawn from the solera for bottling each year, and the barrels will be topped up with selected younger wine.

    10 Year Old Tawny

    The Comments:

The Grant Burge 10 Year Old Tawny is a richly flavoured wine showing a tawny colour with tinges of red. Complex rancio characters show through on the bouquet, together with some fresh fruit characters and excellent integration of spirit. The palate is sweet and mellow but finishes quite dry and shows a harmonious balance of developed fruit characters and oak tannins.

Ten years in Grant Burge's solera system have built layers of savoury rancio complexity, roast almonds, caramel, plum pudding, mixed spice and orange rind, finishing tight and focussed.

    • 93 Points – Tom Cannavan
      Tom Cannavanwww.winepages.com, Canada, Nov 2011

This 18.5% abv Port-style wine has a fabulous nose, flooded with walnut and raisin, with a bit of spice and quite bold, solid fruit beneath. A Grenache, Mataro, Shiraz blend, the palate has beautifully mellow fruit but fantastic intensity, a great weight of chocolate and masses of cappuccino coffee lingering into the finish. AbFab stuff and the price for a full bottle is a steal at around £15.00. 93/100.

A 'WOW' match with Stilton. Rich sweet fruit, figs and plums and raisins with a nutty note and a marmalade hint. It is the perfect foil to the intense saltiness of the cheese, the rich lactose stretching across the palate and lifted by the sweet fruit. Simply Stunning.

This is a more complex, more concentrated and more interesting wine that the standard Aged Tawny. It's the extra barrel age that works the wonders.

Made with Grenache, Mataro and Shiraz. Gorgeous aromas of caramel, floral, herbal and touch of earth. Complex palate that begins with candied pecans, followed by burnt orange, and finishes with cocoa. It starts sweet and finishes dry. Lovely!

Burge's people call him the fortified king, and his Barossa cellars are indeed vast. With hundreds of barrels from his forefathers dating back decades, he bought more when fortifieds briefly fell from favour in the 1980's. By bottling only small amounts and topping up the barrels with younger wine, he's ensured there will be plenty of port like this glorious one for years to come.

Full and lush in the mouth, Grant Burge's 10 Year Old is incredibly easy to drink. The toffee and dried fruit notes are lively and fresh, accented by a hind of peppery spice on the finish. A nice change up for those used to tawny Port.

Ravishingly seductive layers of rich almond oil, nougat and brandied fruit cake. Complex dried figs, crunchy nut toffee and vanilla essence. The cleansing, alcohol finish stays long and warm in your bell.
