    2013 Cameron Vale Cabernet Sauvignon

    The Fruit:

    A portion of this fruit comes from a vineyard of the same name which was planted between 1971 and 1975 in a fertile area between Lyndoch and Williamstown. The remaining fruit was sourced from other premium vineyards in the Barossa and Eden Valley’s. Cameron Vale was the name of Grant’s mother’s ancestor’s home in England. The 2013 vintage in the Barossa saw a cool winter with rainfall well below average followed by a dry spring leading to a smaller than normal fruit set and berry size. Although crops were much lower than normal the resulting wines have great colour and impressive structure resulting in very high quality wines.

    The Winemaking:

    After crushing and de-stemming, the juice was fermented on skins for 8 to 10 days, with selected parcels of the Eden Valley fruit remaining on skins for up to 30 days post fermentation. This process has allowed maximum flavour and tannin extraction and added structure and texture to this wine. Post fermentation, parcels of the wine was transferred to French oak for 20 months maturation.

    The Comments:

    The 2013 Cameron Vale Cabernet Sauvignon is a true reflection of the vintage conditions. Aromas of pure blackcurrant dominate on the nose, with underlying mulberry and blackberry and hints of licorice and spice. The palate is typical cabernet with bold, chalky tannins as the backbone, combined with rich black fruit flavours complemented by complex cedar notes that persist on the finish. This is a masculine style of Cabernet, bold in every way! Although drinking well now, with careful cellaring this wine will develop further for 10 plus years. The rich, complex and supple characters of this wine are a delicious match to roast leg of lamb, lamb chops or braised beef.

        Very much in the full-bodied and generously fruited Grant Burge/Barossa style with stacks of ripe plum and blackberry flavours and dusty/earthy tannins on a rich, smoothly textured, nicely balanced and long-finishing palate that would go a treat with a roast, herb-stuffed shoulder of lamb or a steak and kidney pie.

        Barossa Cabernet sauvignon is often overlooked in favour of the region's punch shirazes, but it is cabernet that often offers better value - and sometimes better drinking. We enjoyed this wine over three days, and it improved daily, as it opened up. It's a classic Burge red with rich black berry and cassis fruit notes, a good whack of well-integrated French oak. And some minty undertones. It was very versatile, food friendly and easy to drink. A generous wine.

        The 2008 Cameron Vale Cabernet Sauvignon has a very deep garnet-purple colour and fragrant mint and eucalyptus aromas over warm cassis, plus some cardamom. The acid on this full bodied wine is very high, cutting through the warm berried, juicy fruit with firm fine tannins and a long finish.

        The Grant Burge Cameron Vale Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 version is a beauty and has a number of plus marks. It shares similarities with the 2004 in that it is a pure Cabernet with luscious dark fruits and the merest hint of leaf – perfect in fact – particularly for my palate which tends to reject anything remotely under ripe. If anything this vintage is more attractive in its youth with luscious sweet fruit characters, a hallmark of a quality Barossa vintage. Again very well balanced it will drink well throughout the next decade and that is being conservative. I am more than happy to drink it now while most of my Coonawarra Cabs are resting.
        Once again, it falls easily into the ‘Excellent’ zone.

        This terrific Cabernet is sourced from the 30+ year-old vines of Grant Burge’s Cameron Vale vineyard. The maturity of the vines is evident in this intensely flavored wine. It has complex layers of dark berries, cassis, earth, chocolate and mint notes. Aged in French oak (35% new), it’s an excellent value from one of the Barossa’s top producers.         The small amount (petit verdot) adds a terrific black-purple centre to the wine, fills out the palate and tightens up the structure without losing the cabernet’s softness and approachability.
        Getting down to the palate, there are generous berry fruit flavours that are enhanced by mint and chocolate hints. Cherry oak provides support to the fruit.
