Grant Burge Icon wines are named in honour of Meshach Burge, the great grandfather of founder Grant Burge who began an enduring family winemaking tradition, and the biblical origins of his name. Abednego, the Babylonian god of wisdom, brings together the three varieties of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvèdre.
The 2016 Abednego allows all three varieties to shine - spice and earthy characters from the Grenache, powerful yet elegant tannin structure and mid palate weight from the Shiraz, and a vibrancy and fruit richness from the Mourvèdre. A perfect balance between structure and fruit sweetness will allow this wine to age for many years, whilst also being a vibrant, fruit dominant wine to enjoy when released.
A cool winter with lower than average rainfall, which continued into spring. Warmer than average temperatures through November, December and January, with early lignification and flavour development observed. Late January rain had a positive effect and this, combined with a mild February and March, allowed for a smooth harvest and good flavour development. 2016 is regarded as a very good to exceptional year for reds in the Barossa.
